One Peace

Posted by terryjamesresourcecentre on March 12, 2009

one-peaceIn One Peace, Janet Wilson brings to light the power young people can have to effect change in society. Drawing upon inspirational children from around the world, Wilson structures her book around individuals such as Faris Calle of Colombia, Zlata Filipovic of Bosnia and Canada’s own Craig Kielburger, and their work. While the title suggests that all her subjects are “activists,” this is not necessarily so. Wilson also highlights children who take simple but powerful steps, such as writing letters, as well.  In addition to her main examples, she also includes photographs, fascinating facts (such as the origin of the famous peace symbol), poetry from children in war-torn countries, and comprehensive end notes.

We have 15 literature kits to support the Be the Change curriculum created by the Ontario School Library Association.  The Be the Change curriculum presents a wealth of resources and lesson ideas to:

  • Raise awareness of children’s rights
  • Create a sense of understanding of world citizenship
  • Empower the youth in our society to the reality that they can and do make a difference
  • Encourage students to take action
  • Change attitudes so that the rights of children never go unnoticed again

See the Be the Change site for lesson plan ideas and blackline masters.
